Fukamushi means deep-steamed, and that is the whole difference: the leaves are steamed for roughly two to three times as long as a standard sencha. The longer steam breaks down the leaf's cell walls and shatters it into smaller particles, so more of the leaf itself ends up suspended in your cup. That is why a fukamushi brews cloudy and dark green, and why it tastes fuller, sweeter and rounder than a standard sencha, with much of the sharp astringency smoothed away. Because the particles are so fine it also infuses fast, so a short steep is enough and over-steeping will make it heavy. It is the style to reach for if regular sencha has ever tasted too sharp to you.
Tea Artisan: HentaさんKagoshima
The henta sencha saemidori is of course grown by Mr. Henta, a talented farmer in Kirishima, Japan. When we met with Mr. Henta for the first time, he taught us so much about the intricacies of different tea plants.
What was really interesting to us was his extensive knowledge of different tea plant varieties, also called cultivars. Each of these cultivars is a little bit different not only in terms of flavor, but also in how they grow.
Although Mr. Henta cultivates green tea on a very small field, he produces 8 different tea plant varieties in total. He has become an expert at blending these different tea plant varieties together to capture the best aspects of each.
Origin: KirishimaJapan
The Henta Sencha Saemidori is cultivated by the skilled farmer Mr. Henta in Kirishima, Japan. During our initial meeting with him, we gained valuable insight into the complexities of various tea plants.
What piqued our interest was Mr. Henta's extensive knowledge of tea plant cultivars, each with unique flavors and growth patterns. Despite cultivating green tea on a small plot of land, he manages to cultivate a total of 8 different tea plant varieties. Through his expertise in blending these cultivars, he is able to capture the finest qualities of each.
Cultivar: SaemidoriTea variety
As the name would suggest, the sencha saemidori henta is made from the Saemidori cultivar.
Saemidori: Saemidori is a difficult tea plant variety to produce, as it can be quite sensitive to the cold and the yield is lower than Yabukita. Nonetheless, this tea cultivar is still used because of the light sweet flavor it produces. While normally reserved for premium green teas like gyokuro and matcha, the cultivar makes an appearance to produce a deliciously flavorful henta sencha saemidori.

Nio teas has been my favourite place to purchase good quality teas for a while now, and still they never disappoint me. Their teas are excellent quality, however, I’d like to give more attention to customer service - Nio team has been very kind and helpful each time I had any sort of problem. Their customer service never disappoints, they are very attentive and quick in responding to any queries, hence why I’ve been a loyal customer for a while now.

We ship from warehouses in the US, the EU and Japan — whichever is closest to you. US and EU orders arrive in 4–12 business days; the handful of countries served from Japan take around 10. Business days count from dispatch rather than from when you order, and exclude weekends and public holidays. You'll get a tracking number by email the moment your parcel leaves the warehouse.
We only buy from fields grown without pesticides or chemicals. We ask each farmer directly how they manage their land, visit the plantation and processing facility ourselves, taste every harvest before committing, and check that the biodiversity around the fields is alive. Small family farms don't always carry paperwork — so we verify it in person instead.
Japanese green tea covers an enormous range, and choosing online isn't easy. If you've tried yours and it isn't for you, email info@nioteas.com within 30 days with your order number and a line on what you didn't enjoy. We'll send a different tea of equal or lower value, free. Nothing to post back — keep it, share it, or try brewing it cooler. Once per order.
Email info@nioteas.com within 30 days with your order number and a photo. We'll approve it, cover the return postage with a prepaid label or a reimbursement, and refund you — no restocking fee. Refunds go to your original payment method within 2 business days of the return reaching us; your bank may take another 5–20 to show it.
Unopened items in their original packaging can be returned within 30 days. Tea is sealed for hygiene, so opened packs can't come back — but the swap above covers exactly that situation. Return postage is yours unless the item arrived damaged, defective or incorrect.
Orders to the US and EU ship domestically from our local warehouse, so there's no customs charge and no duty. A small number of destinations are served from our Japan warehouse, where your own customs authority may apply import duty, VAT or a carrier handling fee on delivery. Those are set by your country, not by us. Ask before you order and we'll help you check.

Please post this review and read my review by Henry K to prove I WAS a loyal customer. I have bought Sencha Henta Saemidori for many years from Nio Teas. I bought two 100 gram bags. Both bags the leaves are like powder. Terrible quality! In the past the leaves were medium to long. The flavour is fine but it is nearly impossible to brew this unless you use a kyusu teapot. As you can see in the photo a few leafs are fine but most are pure powder. This is a fantastic tea when customers get quality product. Two bags having the same issue is not right. It's up to Nio Teas if they wish to fix this because if not they have just lost a loyal customer. I gave this tea in the past 5 stars which is on the product review on your site.
So smooth, brew it warm not hot and I found it to be so sooo rich with umami and a delightful natural sweetness brew after brew. I can enjoy a good 3 to 4 steeps. Lovely
Lovey sweet balanced green tea, an outstanding cold/warm brew during the midday grind in a glass tumbler as you can see da wonderful green leebz unfold and da watta turn green. Highly recommend peepz, cheerz!
Beautiful subtle flavours of stewed spinach, mild seaweed finish with nice sweetness. Nio Tea's best budget Sencha. AMAZING!!! If you like this Gyokuro Kagoshima Sasa Hime is their best Gyokuro.
I dont have the first infusion quite down yet. Instead of a very sweet taste it has weird taste and mouthfeel I cant quite describe which also remains in my mouth quite a while and I dont really like it as I was really hoping for the promised sweetness. This taste was the most immediate when I first opened the package. I closely followed the brewing instructions but that didnt help. It might have to do with the water I'm using since when I cold brewed it, I had a similar experience. If anyone has any tips, let me now. However I'm a huge fan of the second and third infusion, especially regarding the smoothness and it makes for a great start of my day.
Here are some tasting/ aroma notes I could detect:
Dry leaf - sour cherries, freeze-dried strawberries, shortbread, hint of dried rosemary and sage, nettle broth, dried elderflower, oatmeal and almond milk.
Wet leaf - very similar to dry leaf except more intense on the oatmeal and almond milk, slightly sweeter perhaps overall.
Texture - very thick, coating, leaves refreshing astringency in the after-taste
Taste - more on the savoury side overall in contrast to the aroma from the leaves. Very fresh and vegetal, fresh lovage, cucumber peel, steamed spinach, fresh cress and nettle brew. Not as brothy as I expected it to be , a little more grassy, sour cherry tartness in the aftertaste which is very refreshing.
Another enjoyable sencha that has unique characteristics which set it apart from a few others I've tried in the past. There's definitely a bit of a theme going on with that freeze dried red berry note which seems to come up a lot, but taste wise it's definitely savoury, not as sweet but interestingly less umami than expected. Very enjoyable and definitely more approachable for anyone who isn't used to super umami heavy senchas.
Refreshing sip of Henta Saemidori Sencha that @nio_japanese_green_tea had sent over for me to sample. Very fresh and light. Keep your temps cool and your steeps short and you will enjoy this without the bitterness and astringency that often comes with green tea. An enjoyable sip!
The Henta Saemidori has a smooth mouthfeel and is slightly astringent.
The colour of the tea reminds me of green apples, the paler varieties. As for taste, dry grass came to mind, It also has some umami and vegetal notes, but not as much as Henta Okumidori. I would say kale more than spinach. On the photo, the Henta Saemidori is the darker one on the left.
I really like how refreshing this sencha is! Thicker mouthfeel but well balanced with slight umami and lingering sweetness. I particularly love the melon notes that came at the 3rd steep. Very enjoyable!
As far as flavor and fragrance go this is a typical sencha (by which I mean typical of all the senchas on this site, a very vegetal, umami, slightly fruity tea that I really can't get enough of), however the texture is something else altogether in the best possible way; it is very thick and exceptionally oily. It may be something with how this particular tea was processed, but maybe the oils were expressed from the leaves in such a way that you get a lot of it when brewing. After you drink it coats your mouth for a lingering flavor and it quite literally feels like silk! I love this tea
Nice quality-price, I really enjoy the density it gets when infused around 70º C, specially the sharpening of the herbal flavor which gets an slight and pleasant acid touch.
The tea leaves smell so fresh and full of sweetness. I like how it releases it's syrupy sweetness in every cup, making you wanting more and more. The astrigency is almost absent, so nice for your palate and aftertaste notes to understand them better. The deep green broth gives me a hint of locked sweet and fresh flavors ready to get released in your palate. The aftertaste remains with sweetness all over with nice fresh vegetables like spinach and also a very small hint of butter.
The tea was so delicious. It has a deeply fresh aroma, full of sweetness and fresh vegetables. All four steeps were so sweet, almost no astrigency. It was a perfect premium sencha by Henta-san. It has full body so it creates nice taste and aftertaste. The sweetness leaves you nice feeling wanting more and more. I prefer using 60°C - 70°C. The deep green colour gives me a hint of the locked sweet and fresh flavors ready to get unleashed in your palate! Please give it a try! I'll absolutely buy it again!
